Seeing is not the same as looking. Someone said: “Eyes that look are common; eyes that see are rare.”
I think the difference comes down to observation vs. discernment. It’s common for leaders to observe trends and processes and identify what’s working and what’s not. Leadership decisions made through casual observation happen every day. However, “seeing” requires a deeper, more thoughtful look.
It’s possible to notice those around us without seeing their potential. Here’s an example.
The Pharisees looked at Peter and saw an unschooled (and, more than likely, an uncultured) fisherman. Jesus saw in Peter a prophet, preacher, saint, and leader who would help turn the world upside down.
I wonder who we look at as unqualified that may be a leader we have yet to see?
